This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody’s job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn’t do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done
I often hear people say: you can’t change the world on your own. For a long time I believed it … but it’s a lie. In fact, the opposite is true, it’s impossible to not change the world. The changes can be large or small, the impact is always there though, and we are often not aware of it.
It already started before we were born. The mere fact that our mother got pregnant already created changes in the family, for better or for worse. With every interaction throughout our lives we change the world. When we smile, get angry, hug or push away, it all has an impact and it all has a ripple effect.
If you get to work and your boss runs around with a grumpy face, it will most likely have an impact on your thoughts and your mood. You carry that around on the workfloor, affecting your colleagues. And after work you carry that mood home with you and you will affect your family and friends, who in turn will affect the people around them. This might sound small but imagine everyone running around being grumpy. The change would become a tidal wave of grumpiness leading to depression, suicides, violence, …
You might think I’m exaggerating. But imagine going through your entire day without seeing a single friendly face. Now imagine that happening day after day after day. Now imagine the impact of seeing just one friendly face. Now imagine the impact you have if you are that friendly face.
The graph below can be explored by clicking on the circles.
You’re already changing the world. The question is, is it the change you want to see?
